After finding his forever home, Stryker joined the picket lines to improve his socialization. Then came the infamous DEADLINE article quoting studio executives intent on extending the strike until WGA members started losing their homes. There was something so cruel about putting people out on the street, like stray dogs, Stryker on Strike was born.
Stryker spent more than a month and a half in the shelter after being picked up as a stray. The vet estimated he was about a year old in August 2023., which means he spent much of his young life isolated and alone. His official birthday is July 29, his "gotcha day."
Stryker was a stray who ended up in the Downey Animal Shelter, widely considered one of the worst facilities for survival. Based on his appearance, they believe he is a Chihuahua mix, but he also has features of Min-Pin and Black-Faced Cur. Soon we will do a DNA test to determine what kind of "supermut" he is. Until then, we just say he's a rescue dog.
The book is targeted towards middle grade students and kids of all ages. Presented as a picture book, it's a chronicle of one of the most significant events in history.
The cost of writing a book like Stryker on Strike is estimated to be around $20,000. Without an advance from a publisher, the cost would be prohibitive. Especially for Stryker's mom who, like many people in the entertainment industry, has been affected by the labor strikes and overall economy. Raising money in the development phase will help pay rent and other living expenses while defraying the cost of publishing. The campaign will also raise awareness for the book and build an audience for when it is ready to be marketed.
Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and GoFundMe are general purpose and take a portion of the money raised as a commission. Seed&Spark is specifically designed for creatives and boasts that 82% of projects have women in key roles. They pass 100% of contributions (less credit card fees) onto creatives and earn their money through tips and investment partners.
In addition to providing an educational resource for school aged kids to learn about the power of unions, Stryker on Strike will give back to our partners. First, we plan to establish educational programs to teach young writers and actors about entertainment unions. Next, we plan to donate a portion of the proceeds to organizations such as The Animal Rescue Mission, who helped save Stryker, and the Green Envelope Grocery Aid fund, who continues to help those affected by work stoppages.
